In Your Element : An introduction to Daoist Five Element Theory

"Heaven produced five basic raw materials.Their use is necessary for people to live. If one were lacking, the people would be unable to survive." - ChunQiu ZuoZhuan (Spring and Autumn Annals) 722-481 BCE

This quote from the earliest of Chinese classical texts refers to Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal. On this course, we will explore in detail the Five Element framework which provides the backdrop to a significant portion of Daoist medicine. We will delve into the characteristics and associations of each of the elements, learn about the corresponding organ systems (or officials) for each element and how they work together, and spend time in nature looking, touching, smelling, feeling, hearing how these elements coexist.

The best way to experience each of the five elements is to experience each of the seasons. The course will be conducted over 5 days, over 5 seasons: Autumn, Winter, Spring, Summer and Late Summer.

Each sessions will include a mix of lecture / discussion, and time in nature. At each session, you will be provided exercises relevant to each element.
